The Host by Stephenie Meyer

Stephenie Meyer is a very recognizable author due to the popular young adult series The Twilight Saga, and now after 20 years (yes, two zero -- The first Twilight book was published October 1st, 2005, and I am definitely not hyperconscious of my age right now...) a certain stigma comes with her name (Sidebar: one of these days I’ll write an essay/ formal rant about said stigma...) Forget all that when thinking of The Host. After the sudden surge in popularity in the young adult novels, Meyer looked towards an adult audience. The Host was published two years after Breaking Dawn (The Twilight Saga book four). Therefore, it is a different type of world.

This standalone bestseller follows its main character Melanie Stryder, a young woman trying to survive in a time when otherworldly creatures have inhabited the bodies of most humans. Unfortunately, she doesn't last long. An alien "soul" called Wanderer occupies her body only to find that Melanie refuses to fade away. Melanie's strength of will and her deep-rooted love for a man -- Jared -- living in hiding with a large colony of humans keeps her consciousness intact. Despite her inability to control her own body or push Wanderer out, she fights to survive. As both of their thoughts and feelings bleed into one another, the duo sets off in search of the man they both love. The problem, besides Jared's two-in-one love interest? Revealing the location of the survivors to Wanderer could bring about the end of human resistance.

Think Invasion of the Body Snatchers with a bizarre love triangle pitted against the survival of humanity. It's the weird sci-fi romance that you didn't know would warm your heart, and have you rooting for both the protagonist and antagonist at the same time. Twilight fan or otherwise, Stephenie Meyer's The Host offers any type of reader an array of genres and characters. It's a fun, entertaining read with an interesting twist on both dystopic worlds and romantic entanglements. "The Host is a riveting and unforgettable novel about the persistence of love and the essence of what it means to be human." (publisher description)
